BIOGRAPHY

Matthew received his B.S. in Biology and B.A. in Environmental Policy from Duke University in 2019. He received his Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Princeton University in 2025.

He joined Rice in 2025 as a Rice WaTER Institute Postdoctoral Fellow working with both Dr. Pedro Alvarez in Civil and Environmental Engineering and Dr. Michael Wong in Chemical and Biological Engineering. Matthew’s research focuses on PFAS remediation in the soil and water environments using various PFAS destructive technologies, including biodegradation, photocatalysis, pyrolysis, and plasma. Matthew also uses his technical expertise to inform PFAS policy both domestically and abroad. Through this work, Matthew hopes to set a precedent for technologically and socioeconomically sound policies to mitigate human and environmental exposure to emerging contaminants.

Outside the office, Matthew enjoys playing board games, trying out new recipes, and exploring Houston!
